Rhombus Launches Remote Charging Dispenser for Electric Vehicles

Today, Rhombus Energy Solutions launched our RES-D2-CS20 electric vehicle (EV) charging dispenser. The RES-D2-CS20 was just certified by Underwriters Laboratory (UL) and the CSA Group for use in both unidirectional and bi-directional charging use cases that is built specifically for medium- and heavy-duty (M/HD) EV fleet needs, and provides a perfect match for the Rhombus 60kW and 125kW Power Conditioning Systems (PCSs). The certifications being announced today include UL 2202 (Standard for Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging System Equipment) and UL 2231 (Personnel Protection Systems for Electric Vehicle (EV) Supply Circuits: Particular Requirements for Protection Devices for Use in Charging Systems), as well as CSA C22.2. These standards define design, safety and testing requirements for all EV charging systems.

Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G), which require bi-directional functionality, provide a means for EV fleet operators to utilize their vehicles as a source of energy storage, allowing power to be put back onto the grid during peak demand hours or to be used to power buildings in a “behind the meter” approach. The combination of bi-directional charging with the market-leading reliability of Rhombus’ high-power DC-DC chargers ensures EV OEMs, charging network operators and fleet EV operators that they can install chargers today that will meet tomorrow’s needs. The addition of Rhombus M/HD EV chargers to the San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E) approved equipment list is a testament to the capability of Rhombus chargers, and an illustration of the necessity of bi-directional charging functionality going forward.

Rhombus has built high-power inverters for renewable energy such as “behind the meter” grid energy storage systems for several years. We have applied that expertise to the design of our latest-generation bi-directional EV charging systems (which are designed from the start for the needs of fleet operators) and bi-directional smart inverter systems for microgrids. Rhombus expertise in energy management system (EMS) software is also embedded in our VectorStat EMS controller and software which is embedded in our EV charging systems and smart inverters. Rhombus also excels in the design and testing of high-power electrical equipment to meet the requirements of UL and other certification organizations. We have built hundreds of V2G-capable high-power, high-reliability chargers and bi-directional smart inverters for a variety of different sizes and classes of EVs.
