The Importance of Celebrating Grateful Patients

Let’s face it—patients have a lot of reasons to complain.  From the hassle of navigating health insurance to finding the right physician in dealing with the reality of their medical issues, the life of a patient can be downright discouraging.

But in our day to day interactions with patients at Legacy Health Strategies, we find there are many patients who have chosen to embrace gratitude and view their illness not as a burden but as a blessing. That doesn’t really come as a surprise to us, since Rolf Benirschke, our CEO, regularly refers to himself as the most grateful patient.”   After growing weary of listening to all the negativity surrounding health care, we launched The Grateful Patient Project (GPP) in 2017.  Through GPP we provide a platform for patients to share their stories of gratitude for the health care providers, medicines, and institutions that saved their lives.

We celebrate National Grateful Patient Day every year on September 7, the day Rolf returned to play in the NFL after his life-threatening illness, by rallying grateful patients from around the world to simply say “Thank You.” And we’d like to invite you to join us as a Grateful Patient Day Partner and spread gratitude to all those in the medical community who deserve it the most.  And this year, due to Covid-19 we have more reasons to say thank you than ever before.

The root of joy is gratefulness…It is not joy that makes us grateful; it is gratitude that makes us joyful.
